Chartering Can Be Full of Surprises.
Charter companies advertise an hourly rate, but that’s just part of the overall cost. Your total costs with charter companies are typically based on the following:
  • Charter hourly rate—the base rate for one hour of flight time.
  • Positioning time—the time it takes to get the aircraft from its base to you and back. The additional cost to you for positioning is calculated by the number of hours of positioning needed multiplied by the charter hourly rate.
  • All other costs—consists of fuel, crew expenses and overnight fees, segment fees, taxes, departure, landing and ground services fees, de-icing fees and international fees (for flights outside the United States).
  • FET—Federal Excise Tax (tax imposed by the government), a percentage of the costs mentioned above.
